Medellín airport to the city: taxi, bus and ride apps (2026)

The airport is not in Medellín, it is on the other side of the mountain. Here is how to get across, with 2026 fares.

View of Medellín: the city's buildings with the mountains behind

The short answer

From José María Córdova airport to Medellín there are two sensible ways to get in. The official taxi costs 132,000 pesos, a flat fare, and drops you at your door. The airport bus costs 20,000 pesos, runs 24 hours and drops you at three points in the city from which you continue by Metro or a short taxi. If two or more are traveling, the taxi almost always pays off; if you are alone with little luggage, take the bus.

First: which airport you land at

Medellín has two. Almost all flights, and every international one, land at José María Córdova (code MDE), which is not in Medellín but in Rionegro, on the other side of the mountain and at 2,142 meters. That is the one this guide is about.

The other is Olaya Herrera (EOH), inside the city, next to the Terminal del Sur bus station. Regional flights use it. If you land there, you are a few minutes by taxi from El Poblado and need none of what follows.

By taxi: 132,000 pesos, flat fare

The fare between the airport and Medellín is set by the mayor's office and is the same to any neighborhood in the city. Since February 2, 2026 it is 132,000 pesos in a standard taxi, 134,100 in an electric taxi and 143,100 in a luxury taxi. There is no haggling and no meter: it is that amount.

Take the taxi from the authorized line, at the terminal exit. Inside the airport people will approach you offering rides; local press has documented that they are unauthorized drivers. Say no and walk on to the line. Before getting in, confirm the total with the driver and ask whether it includes the tunnel toll, which in 2026 costs 26,300 pesos.

If your destination is not Medellín but another town in the valley, such as Bello, the fare may be different: ask before you leave.

By bus: 20,000 pesos, 24 hours

The airport bus is run by Combuses and costs 20,000 pesos since January 1, 2026. It runs all day and all night, with frequent departures, and you can pay in cash, by card, by QR code or with the Metro's Cívica card. At the airport, the bus staff are at exits 2 and 3.

It does not reach El Poblado or Laureles. It stops at three points, and from there you continue on your own.

  • San Diego: next to the shopping mall of the same name, which opened a new stop in June 2026. It is the closest to El Poblado: from there, a short taxi.
  • Exposiciones Metro station: to continue by Metro. El Poblado is two stations south and the fare is 4,400 pesos.
  • Nutibara, downtown: behind the Hotel Nutibara. Useful if you are heading downtown or to Laureles; at night, leave from there by taxi.

By Uber, DiDi or another app

Ride apps work in Medellín, but they remain unregulated in Colombia: in February 2026 the government withdrew the bill that was going to define their status. In practice, Rionegro's traffic authority runs checks at the airport and impounds app cars, which is why many drivers cancel or ask you to walk to another spot.

It is not much cheaper either: in February 2026 one app quoted about 127,000 pesos from the airport to Sabaneta. Our advice is simple: to arrive, official taxi or bus; to get back to the airport from the city, the app works better.

How long it takes

Since August 2019 the short way is the Túnel de Oriente, 8.2 kilometers long, which cuts through the mountain and connects the airport with the edge of the city in about 20 minutes. Adding the stretch to your hotel, allow about 40 minutes to El Poblado without traffic and up to an hour at rush hour. The other two roads, Las Palmas and Santa Elena, are longer and prettier.

Which one suits you

The math is quick.

  • You are alone, by day, with one suitcase: bus to San Diego or Exposiciones. You spend between 25,000 and 35,000 pesos in total.
  • There are two or more of you: taxi. Split three ways it is 44,000 pesos each and drops you at the door.
  • You arrive in the small hours or with a lot of luggage: official taxi, no question.
  • You are heading to Laureles or the Estadio area: taxi, or bus to Nutibara and a short taxi.

Before you land: immigration and construction

If you arrive from abroad, fill in Migración Colombia's Check-Mig form between 72 hours and one hour before your flight. It is free and done on the official website; be wary of sites that charge to process it.

Expect lines. The airport handled about 14.5 million passengers in 2025, in a terminal designed for 11 million, and since April 2026 it has been under expansion works that affect the immigration and baggage areas until 2027. Do not book anything for the first hour after landing.

And straight from the airport to Guatapé?

The airport is on the same side of the mountain as Guatapé, so the idea is tempting. We found no confirmed direct bus: what exists are private transfers or combining local transport through Rionegro and Marinilla, with suitcases. For most people it is more comfortable to get to Medellín, drop the luggage and do Guatapé another day: by bus or with our Guatapé tour, which leaves El Poblado at 7:00 a.m.

Getting back to the airport

The bus leaves from the same three points, San Diego, Nutibara and Exposiciones station, at any hour. The taxi costs the same as on arrival. For an international flight leave your hotel three and a half hours ahead; for a domestic one, two and a half. And with the city sorted, next comes what to do in Medellín and how to get around with peace of mind.
